Frequently Asked Questions
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is the process of using very fine short needles to create imperceptible micro-channels in the epidermis. With the correct size needle length of at least 0.5mm, like the Monarch Beauty Roller, this process increases collagen production, cell turnover and exfoliates the skin for a firmer, smoother appearance.
Where can I microneedle?
The most popular areas are on the face (forehead, cheeks, chin), neck and décolleté, and body (buttocks, thighs, abdomen and arms). The only places we don’t recommend microneedling is on sensitive, compromised skin, which includes eyelids, open wounds, cold sores, active acne (anything that’s causing broken skin), and raised surfaces like moles. If you have any chronic skin conditions or concerns, please consult with your dermatologist before using any at-home microneedling devices.
When should I microneedle?
We recommend using the Monarch Beauty Roller no more frequently than every two to three weeks. This allows the rejuvenation process to fully occur and helps optimize increased collagen production, cell turnover and healing, thus yielding the best results.
Is microneedling painful?
You may feel a light tingling sensation as your session progresses, and it often feels like a light sunburn by the end of each session. This is completely normal and reassuring that the process is working. Some areas may be more intense than others, like under the eyes, but if at any time you feel discomfort, feel free to discontinue using in that area. You may also opt to make fewer passes in each area as well.
How much pressure should I apply when using the Monarch Beauty Roller?
Just using the weight of the Monarch Beauty Roller is enough. No additional pressure is necessary.
How big are the needles on the Monarch Beauty Roller?
The needle size on all Monarch Beauty Roller attachments (face, eye and body) are 0.5mm, the shortest needle length actually capable of stimulating collagen production. Smaller needle sizes may increase transdermal absorption of topical products, but they will NOT increase collagen synthesis.
Should I use retinol/retinoids after microneedling?
No, it is not recommended to use retinol or any type of retinoids after using the Monarch Beauty Roller. It will likely irritate the skin and interfere with the healing and rejuvenation process.
What do I need to do prior to starting a microneedling session?
Due to the risk of infection, it is important to take the following precautions:
What should I know and do after finishing a microneedling session?
+ Due to the increased permeability of the skin after completing a microneedling session, your skin is very prone to moisture loss. The permeability is greatest for the first eight hours after a session, but is still increased for the first 24 hours.
Can I use the Monarch Beauty Roller in conjunction with Botox and fillers?
Yes, but we recommend that you wait at least two weeks after getting any Botox/Dysport or fillers before microneedling. We also recommend consulting with your dermatologist for a personal treatment recommendation.
